Interview with Jan Rehnig, Managing Director of the EMKA Group

Jan Rehnig has been the EMKA Group‘s Management Board spokesperson since the summer of 2024.

“Our foundation is solid, and we have ambitious plans”

He was, in effect, following in the footsteps of Friedhelm Runge, who had spent half a century establishing the company as the leading global firm in locking technology. During an interview with Jürgen Wirtz, editor-in-chief of SCHALTSCHRANKBAU, Jan Rehnig discussed his beginnings at the company, market difficulties, and his own driving forces.

Mr Rehnig, you took over the responsibility for EMKA in 2024. How was the start?

The start was undoubtedly challenging. The past year was marked by uncertainty – inflation, global elections, sluggish investment by companies and a shortage of skilled workers. Nevertheless, we were able to close 2024 with slight growth and create a solid foundation for 2025. I am proud of how stable we have been throughout this phase. This speaks volumes for our team and the fundamental structure created by Friedhelm Runge.

What strategic principles enable EMKA to address challenges such as supply bottlenecks and bureaucratisation?

Our operations are based on a high degree of vertical integration, a decentralised production structure, and the “local-for-local” principle. This means that we manufacture close to our global customers. It provides flexibility, particularly when faced with evolving factors such as customs tariffs or supply chains. Concurrently, we reinforce our locations through clearly defined quality standards and individual accountability.

In which industries and locations does EMKA currently identify significant opportunities?

Classic switch cabinet design remains our core business. We are also active in various other markets, ranging from mechanical engineering and telecommunications to HVAC technology. Server cabinet design, energy storage and power distribution applications are currently performing particularly well. We are seeing strong growth in India, Mexico and the USA, driven by local structures and targeted investments.

What requirements do your customers in the control cabinet construction sector have – and how do you address these requirements from a technical point of view?

Requirements vary greatly depending on the area of application, for example, whether a control cabinet is located indoors or outdoors and what environmental conditions it is exposed to. Our locking systems are designed to be durable and reliable. By using different materials – from plastic to die-cast zinc to stainless steel – we can customise our solutions to suit individual needs.

What does EMKA‘s “Quality First” promise mean for you in the daily operation?

We operate globally, employing standardized equipment, processes, and materials. Consistent high quality is ensured by our dedicated testing laboratories, strict standards, and extensive vertical integration. This principle safeguards our products and our employment.

As managing director, what values are particularly important to you?

For me, respect is the basis of any collaboration. Only when we treat each other with respect can trust develop. And trust is essential for stable partnerships and for success as a team. Responsibility and reliability are just as important: I must be able to rely on our employees, just as they must be able to rely on me. EMKA functions as a team – this team spirit was also always very imp  ortant to Mr Runge. Personally, I adhere to the principle of “a man of his word”. At a time when this is no longer a matter of course, it is all the more important to me.

When looking back on EMKA and its development, what are you personally most proud of?

I am impressed by the way EMKA has grown from a medium-sized company to a global market leader while staying true to its values. Today, we are globally positioned, have a high level of vertical integration and offer everything from a single source. Additionally, as a family-owned business, we have maintained close customer relationships, made prompt decisions, and consistently prioritised the delivery of practical solutions, as opposed to simply providing products.

How do you manage to balance all of this in your private life?

Sport serves as a personal outlet. Previously, my interests encompassed football and golf; currently, I am a regular participant in paddle tennis. Moreover, I am enthusiastic about technology, particularly automobiles. Maintaining mental clarity is essential, especially amidst considerable responsibilities.
