FIBOX and EMKA: a 30-year partnership

Durable enclosures depend on consistently reliable hardware. This is why FIBOX, as a leading enclosure manufacturer, has been relying on EMKA solutions for over 30 years. This partnership is defined by its shared commitment to quality, individuality, and technical precision. The combination of strong enclosures and customised locking systems results in solutions capable of withstanding extreme conditions.

Two experts for the toughest requirements

Founded in Finland in 1966, FIBOX was initially part of Fiskars Corporation. The year 1991 saw the company’s separation from Fiskars, allowing it to dedicate itself to premium enclosing solutions.

This reorganization paved the way for international expansion.

Today, FIBOX is an international leader in the manufacture of plastic and aluminium enclosures and employs around 600 people worldwide.

With production sites in Finland, South Korea, and China, and distribution hubs in Europe, the UK, and the USA, the company showcases its extensive global network.

FIBOX set new standards early on with the introduction of injection-moulded polycarbonate enclosures for the design of control cabinets. This innovation made the company a pioneer for robust, durable and functional enclosure solutions that reliably protect electronic devices and control systems even under demanding environmental conditions. Headquartered in the city of Espoo, Finland, the company remains true to its Nordic roots and combines state-of-the-art technology with minimalist, functional design. These products find applications across diverse sectors, including automation, telecommunications, solar energy, power generation, and distribution, and the building industry, among others.

Quality, innovation, and customisation

The plastic enclosures are known for their high quality and durability: They are waterproof, UV-protected, corrosion-resistant and shockproof. Beyond the 1,000+ standard configurations, FIBOX provides bespoke enclosures. These are customised to individual needs through specialised surface treatments, printing, or other modifications. Developed in close collaboration with the customer, these are delivered ready for assembly. “Our mission is to provide high-quality standard solutions and collaborate with customers to create customised enclosures that meet the most stringent requirements”, explains Allan Schultz Jensen, FIBOX’s Head of Product Management.

EMKA locking solutions complete FIBOX systems

Besides a compact housing, it is also important to choose the right locking solution to protect the interior from unauthorised access and inclement environmental conditions. Not manufacturing these specialized locking systems in-house, the company has selected an experienced outside partner. FIBOX has trusted EMKA’s expertise and high-quality products for over 30 years in the demanding field of enclosure and housing technology, where security is paramount. Equipping switch and control cabinets with locking technology has always been the core business of the global market leader from Velbert.

Accordingly, the experts in design and development have a great deal of experience. EMKA offers complete locking solutions that are precisely harmonised with each other. This ensures efficient handling and consistent quality in opening and closing all enclosures.

The majority of the standardised and customised FIBOX enclosure solutions for the various application areas contain EMKA components. In addition to quarter-turn locks and compression latches, the matching keys and cams are also included in the scope of delivery. The most frequently used locking solution at the Porta Westfalica site in Germany is the wing knob quarter turn from the 1000 series made of die-cast zinc. These quarter turns have different locking mechanisms so that each one must be operated with an individual key.

This restriction ensures only authorised personnel can access certain enclosure contents – a significant advantage, particularly for applications requiring specific access authorisations. In Finland, FIBOX is increasingly focussing on stainless compression latches with double-bit operation. In combination with the corresponding polyamide keys, they offer a reliable and user-friendly solution that ensures both security and ease of use.

FIBOX values EMKA’s superior product quality and its capacity to meet specific needs with effective solutions. Whether it’s quarter turn locks, compression locks or multiple interlocking systems – the close collaboration between the two experts results in customised solutions that are precisely tailored to specific customer requirements.

The combination of standardised and individual locking systems makes it possible to meet the highest demands in terms of security and functionality. “Especially when the protection of data and goods is becoming increasingly important, EMKA’s expertise offers invaluable added value for our products”, emphasises Allan Schultz Jensen.

The long-standing cooperation between FIBOX and EMKA is based on trust, technical expertise and a shared commitment to quality. With perfectly matched locking solutions, EMKA helps to ensure that FIBOX high-quality enclosures reliably protect sensitive technology.

EMKA compression latches

... are used by FIBOX as a solution for additional compression

Open state

  • The cam is in the open position
  • The latch is in the uncompressed state
  • The door is not locked

Closed state

  • The insert is turned 90 degrees using a key
  • This also turns the cam 90 degrees behind the frame, bringing it into the locked position
  • The door is locked

Compressed state

  • When the insert is turned a further 90 degrees (total 180 degrees), the cam moves 6 mm (alternatively 4.5 mm) in the axial direction
  • The door is drawn evenly into the gasket
  • The door or flap is locked and in the com-pressed state
