EMKA protects blind drives from elero

Achieving a comfortable interior environment is key on finding the ideal harmony of light and shadow.

Achieving a comfortable interior environment is key on finding the ideal harmony of light and shadow.

When using Venetian blind motors made by elero GmbH, the position of the slats can be precisely controlled to regulate the amount of light entering the room and maintain a comfortable temperature. The customised motor housings from EMKA ensure the necessary stability and durability so that the drives work reliably even under demanding conditions.

The elero GmbH headquarters are located in Schlierbach near Stuttgart, Germany. The company is one of the world‘s largest manufacturers of electric drives and controls for intelligent building automation. Since the firm was established in 1964, the company’s name has been synonymous with German engineering, accuracy, and top-notch quality. The genesis of it all was a straightforward yet revolutionary concept: “Eliminate manual operation of roller shutters”. From humble beginnings, the workshop has transformed into a global entity, frequently pioneering advancements in home and building automation. To this day, development, production, quality control and assembly are still carried out in Germany. To accommodate this philosophy, in 2017 the construction of a modern company building with an integrated production plant covering an area of 16,600 m2, was built in Schlierbach.

Sun protection at the touch of a button

Indoor climate is always affected by natural light, from the peak of summer to autumn‘s unpredictable conditions. When it is cloudy outside or the sun suddenly breaks through the clouds, rooms can quickly become rapidly too warm or too bright. Venetian blinds offer a simple and nearly flawless solution for managing lighting, thereby creating a comfortable interior environment.

However, adjusting the slats of conventional manual blinds is often a tedious task. Thanks to elero‘s drives for electric blinds, this process can be automated effortlessly. With the push of a button, the slats can be precisely adjusted up, down, or at an angle. This feature enables precise control of how much sunlight will enter the room, which helps manage the room‘s temperature and effectively utilises natural light. The technology is quiet, reliable and energy efficient. The robust design and the option of seamless integration into modern smart home and building automation systems also offer maximum convenience.

The perfect housing for precision technology

In order to permanently protect the sensitive drive components of the Venetian blind motor and ensure their functionality even under demanding conditions, elero sought a reliable partner for the development and manufacture of an optimised gearbox housing. The objective was a comprehensive solution, offering both technical accuracy and cost-effectiveness, all from one provider. After careful consideration, elero chose EMKA in 2021. While EMKA is mainly recognised as the leading global provider of fasteners, hinges, and gaskets, it has, in the last few years, also become a manufacturing and process partner within the industry. EMKA Production was spun off from the main fittings business – its core expertise – to become a more focused solutions provider for industrial manufacturing. Since then, industrial customers from a wide range of industries have benefited from the entire range of manufacturing and services offered by EMKA.

“On the one hand, the technology portfolio was a very good fit for our products and functional assemblies, and on the other hand, we were looking for a partner who could realise complete functional assemblies with a high degree of vertical integration”, says Michael Ankele, Head of Strategic Purchasing at elero, summarising the decision criteria. The new motor housing was to be made of aluminium.

This material offers several advantages: It is significantly lighter than other materials, making it easier to handle in sensitive installation locations. The gear assembly, a sophisticated mechanism, operates with components that fit together precisely. The housing acts as a stable, protective shell that reliably encloses this unit and ensures its long-term functionality. However, the switch to aluminium also placed new demands on production, as the processes had to be precisely tailored to the properties of the material.

EMKA relied on its expertise in aluminium die casting and its special equipment, which consists of nine die casting machines. The motor housings are manufactured as part of a group-wide project: The high-precision aluminium components are produced at the Wuppertal site and then further processed and assembled at the plant in Bosnia. This approach demonstrates how EMKA implements complete solutions from a single source and seamlessly integrates design, production and logistics across locations. With the aid of state-of-the-art technology and high-dimensional accuracy, thin-walled, stable enclosures can be manufactured that provide optimum protection for elero’s drive components while minimising weight.

A reliable partner for the future

elero considers its collaboration with EMKA to be extremely constructive and a solution-oriented partnership. Despite challenging demands, EMKA proved to be highly flexible and committed to collaborating with elero in order to devise the most effective solutions. “In EMKA, we have found a partner who manufactures our motor housings with precision and consistently high quality – and thus makes a decisive contribution to the performance of our shutter drives”, explains Michael Ankele. elero GmbH intends to keep collaborating with EMKA in the future, leveraging their positive experiences, and also including them in forthcoming product developments and projects.
