Hinges are used to connect components in a movable way. The hinge allows the two components to open and close at an angle to each other that is limited by the hinge construction and the installation situation. As a rule, these components are the frame of a cabinet or housing or a box or chest. On the opposite side is the door or flap as an element to be movably connected. The hinge is like a joint in which the hinge halves and the parts connected to them (doors, flaps) move on circular paths around a fixed axis (e.g. on the door frame).
How does a hinge work?
The two hinge halves are screwed or welded to the door and the frame, in rare cases also glued or nailed. Both hinge halves rotate around a pin that serves as an axle and thus connects both hinge halves and thus the frame and door in a movable way. Often the pin is also a fixed component of one hinge half as a hinge bracket and the other hinge half rotates around this axis. While the hinge bracket is the hinge half that is fixed to the door frame, the hinge half on the door is usually referred to as the lug.
What types of hinges are there?
Basically, a distinction is made between separable or detachable and inseparable connections. With separable connections, the hinge and thus the door or flap can be unhinged. Hinges are among the oldest known construction elements and are elementary for opening and closing doors or flaps. Today, the range of products extends from simple plastic film hinges to punched and rolled hinges made of stainless steel, steel or zamak to highly complicated gear hinges.
