Background and Requirements
The RoHS- and WEEE-Directives apply in all countries of the European Union. For the territory of the EU these guidelines are to regulate placing on the market/use and waste disposal of electrical and electronic equipment in view of contaminant loads.
As of July 1, 2006, the EU-Directive 2002/95/EG, abbr. RoHS (Restrictions of Hazardous Substances), for a restriction of the use of certain materials within electrical and electronic equipment, governs material concentrations of lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium VI (hexavalent chromium) and brominated flame retardants for electrical and electronic equipment newly put in circulation.
In connection with the RoHS-Directive the EU-Directive 2002/96/EG, abbr. WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment), was adopted. Preferential objective of the WEEE-directive is the support of reutilisation and reduction of used electrical and electronic devices as well as their reuse, recycling and recovery.
The regulations of the WEEE-directive have become part of German law by the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Act (ElektroG), effective as of March 16, 2005.

Since July 1st, 2006, the date fixed by law, the whole range of products from the EMKA standard program are in compliance with RoHS.
